It was great getting to know your sorors parents, siblings, and other friends and family members because they supported our events. Joining Sigma was like having an extended family to learn so many life skills from the sorors, someone to share your ups and downs with, and developing lifelong friendships. Then it became having meaningful things to do on campus and in the community for others. It also was great getting to know the alumnae members who were very involved with the sorority and guided us. Initially, for me, it was belonging to a group where other women my age could be together on campus. We all had different reasons as we attended some of the events to learn more. She was instrumental in getting fourteen other friends to join with her. My neighborhood friend whom I was in the same class all through middle school, introduced the idea of joining Sigma Gamma Rho with her. Growing up, I never knew or heard about any sorority. I was the first in my family as a college graduate. I was inducted into Sigma at Morgan State in the fall of 1971.
